Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Stauffer, Hans Ulrich (1929 - 1965)Born in 1929 in Aarau, Switzerland; died on 22 August 1965, at the age of 36.
Graduated from the University of Zurich in 1950.
He worked in the herbarium there, developing his specialism in Santalaceae.
After gaining his PhD from University of Zurich in 1959 he became a lecturer there.
In 1963-1964 he journeyed to South Africa, Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Fiji, Hawaii and the U.S. to gather data on all aspects of Santalaceae.
He also made large collections of herbarium material.
After publishing several revisions of African and South American genera in the Santalaceae, Stauffer's overall aim was to produce a Flora Malesiana. Unfortunately his ambitions were not to be realised, for he fell ill and died at the early age of 36.
His main collaborators and co-collectors in the Australasian area were Hansjorg Eichler (1916 - 1992), Ted Moore (1908-2003) and John
Womersley (1920-1985).
