Wycherley, Paul Renoden (1928 - 2018)Born on 17 June 1928 in Bromley, Kent, England, UK; died c.20 September 2018 in Canning Vale, WA.
He was
educated at the University College, London (Hons) Botany (1949), Ph.D.
(1952).
In 1951-52 he was guest student at Wageningen
Agricultural College in the Netherlands.
In 1953 he was appointed
Botanist, and from 1965-71 Head, of the Botany Division
of the Rubber Research Institute of Malaya, based in Kuala Lumpur.
He was mafe a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the UK's New Year Honours list of 1972.
In 1972 he was appointed Director of
King's Park and Botanic Garden, Perth, WA.
Paul Wycherley continued John Beard's legacy of promoting active research on the native flora of Western Australia. Research programs were significantly expanded during his time as director, and a number of new appointments were made. Particular emphasis was placed on horticultural research, and a significant number of cultivars of native species were developed during this time.
Wycherley also supported the production and publication of several books on Kings Park, particularly Common Animals in Kings Park and Perth Gardens, Kings Park Plants: A Guide to Naming the Bushland Plants and The Bushland Plants of Kings Park Western Australia.
Wycherley inaugurated the Kings Park Research Notes series and collaborated on plant conservation projects.
Wycherley prepared several unpublished reports on the history of Kings Park.
One mistletoe collection and three fungal collections are attributed to Wycherley.
Wycherley was honoured in the plant name Conospermum wycherleyi E.M.Benn in 1995.
